Councilman Jon Burgess Honors Homestead Public Services with Proclamation

During a Special Council Presentation in November 2014, Councilman Jon Burgess took to the council chamber floor to honor Homestead Public Services Electric Utilities Director, Barbara Quiñones and her staff for their exemplary work providing the citizens of Homestead with safe, lower-cost, reliable energy in observance of Public Power Week in the State of Florida.

With the onset of Public Power Week, the Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) and its members, Florida’s 34 public power utilities, join more than 2,000 public power utilities across the nation to share the importance of public power’s contributions to local citizens. Now in its 28th year, Florida’s municipal utilities are using Public Power Week to remind citizens that your local utility helps to build a strong community.

As a community-owned, locally controlled, not-for-profit electric utility, the Electric Division of Homestead Public Services provides homes, businesses, farms, social services and local government agencies with reliable, efficient and cost effective electricity while employing sound business practices designed to ensure the best possible service at very competitive rates. Since 1916, Homestead Public Services has been a valuable community asset that has made substantial contributions to Homestead residents through energy efficiency, customer service, environmental protection, economic development and safety awareness.

“The citizens of Homestead place a high value on local control of our city services,” said Councilman Burgess. “We are fortunate to be the owners of the energy that we consume in this city and that we have such a professional and dependable department that provides us with the essential energy we need to perform the tasks necessary to managing our day to day lives. I am proud to proclaim, on behalf of City of Homestead Mayor Jeff Porter, the week of October 5-11 to be designated as the 28th Annual Public Power Week in the City of Homestead.”
