Over 800 South Dade Families Receive Easter Food Donations

Over 800 South Dade families enjoyed the comforts of food and family on Easter Sunday thanks to the second annual Easter Basket Food Distribution. The event, held Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Harris Field, was made possible by the efforts of Councilman Jimmie L. Williams, III; the Southwest Advisory Committee; and Farm Share. Each family received a bountiful basket containing chicken, canned food items, papayas, bananas, plantains, bread, fruits, and vegetables.

The contents of each basket were provided by Farm Share, which packages an abundance of surplus food and distributes it to individuals, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, churches, and other organizations feeding the hungry in Florida — free of charge. By tapping into a vast supply of donated produce, they keep costs low, while providing fresh fruits and vegetables and other nutritious food to the hungry and food insecure.

“I’m so thankful that, for the second year in a row, we were able to help those who need it most,” said Councilman Williams. “Living in a society where so many have plenty it is easy to forget that millions of Americans still go hungry. The Homestead community is so great about giving back and I want to thank everyone who helped bring this event to fruition.”

Families present at the event received food baskets distributed by volunteers from various community organizations such as the Homestead Police Department & Police Explorers, Full Deliverance Baptist Church, Homestead Senior High Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, Miami-Dade College DREAM Team, Homestead's Equal Rights Association, Miami Bridge Youth and Family Services, and the Pi Delta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and their Pearl Essence students.
