Seminole Theatre Grand Opening Brings New Life to Downtown Homestead

Excitement filled the air as over one thousand people gathered for the Seminole Theatre’s Grand Opening after nearly 40 years of vacancy. The unforgettable evening began with the free Arts & Culture Festival in Losner Park, next door to the theatre. The park transformed into a cultural playground with a magical feel as attendees roamed between light-covered tents featuring different art forms. Attendees experienced live music, improve and theatre, acrobats, spoken word, fire dancing, live painting, magic, and an interactive community art project.

Then, the Seminole Theatre’s doors opened for “A Night on Broadway,” the sold out Grand Opening Performance. Elegantly dressed guests walked the red carpet and mingled in the lobby before taking their seats for show, which featured some of the country’s most talented musical performers singing a selection of hits from Broadway’s biggest shows—Beauty and the Beast, Les Miserables, Evita, and Wizard of Oz among others. The show was live streamed from the full house inside to a packed Losner Park on a giant inflatable screen. Immediately following the finale, a heartfelt rendition of “The Little Drummer Boy” sung by the whole cast. Local students had the chance to attend an education Q&A Session with the performers after the show.

The renovation of the Seminole Theatre as a cultural arts center is part of an overall effort to activate Downtown Homestead as a place for the community to experience arts, culture, and entertainment with a series of civic and community ventures. These include the new City Hall, which is slated to open in early 2016, the expansion of Losner Park as a civic plaza for community events, and the construction of a new Police Station in the heart of Downtown.
