Homestead Celebrates Construction Milestone on New Police Station with Topping-Off Ceremony

Homestead Mayor and Council, residents, city staff, and construction workers gathered to celebrate the Topping-Off of Homestead’s first new Police Station ever built for our officers. The Topping-Off signifies the completion of the building’s structure and honors the hard work of all those who helped bring the facility to this point.

Attendees gathered inside the skeleton of the new Police Station to see the building’s progress and hear from those who helped make it possible. “I want to thank everyone here for supporting our officers and moving us out of an unsafe building,” remarked Homestead Police Chief Al Rolle. “When you voted for this new Police Station, you voted to keep us safe in the same way that we work to keep you safe every day. Thank you so much to each and every one of you.”

Homestead broke ground on the new Police Station in October 2015, following the decisive May 2014 Bond Referendum. An overwhelming majority of Homestead residents voted in favor of Downtown Revitalization projects including the newly revitalized Seminole Theatre, new Police Station, and a temporary Police Station at the Homestead Sport Complex, which currently houses HPD.

The old police station presented several issues such as radon and mold contamination, outdated facilities, and other safety concerns. In fact, radon levels inside the old police station are five times higher than they should be and radon is the leading cause of lung cancer amongst non-smokers.

The new facility will be a 55,000 square, three-story police headquarters with a one story ancillary building and on-site parking. The station was designed by Rodriguez & Quiroga Architects Chartered and the project contractor is Munilla Construction Management. The new Police Station is expected to open in early 2017.
