Councilwoman Fairclough Honors Speedway Community Church for Volunteering Efforts

Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough acknowledged the selfless, charitable efforts of the Speedway Community Church in helping enrich and revitalize Campbell Drive K-8 School. The Councilwoman introduced the church’s leadership during a Special Council Presentation in May 2014.

“Let me first introduce First Lady Joanne Shiffer and her husband Pastor Brock Shiffer. Theirs is a small church but one with a big heart. In March they were recognized in a national publication for the good works they do and their partnership with Campbell Drive K-8. They have adopted this school and have provided so many incentives for those boys and girls. They have also done much to bolster their efforts by recruiting local businesses to get involved as well.”

At this time, Joanne Shiffer stepped to the podium for a few words. “We began this partnership prior to the school year last year. My husband called on his many contacts within the military and in the civilian and church communities to do our very first ‘clean-up.’ The Saturday before the beginning of the school year, classrooms were washed and painted and grounds were landscaped. It was a tremendous event where Church and State worked as one.”

The church was also instrumental in providing winter coats for first and second graders and restoring a neglected patch of land on school property into a beautiful butterfly garden. Local Homestead business, Nail Fever 3, were so receptive to help, they donated $1000 for the purchase of a flat screen TV, a printer, paper and a computer.

In closing, Councilwoman Fairclough said, “To volunteer is to live in accordance with the values of righteousness, selflessness and, above all, altruism. The City of Homestead honors your commitment to helping our city grow.”
